10 DIY Projects for Your Rustic Farmhouse

With many of us spending a lot more time in our homes this year, it’s no surprise home renovations and redecorations are on the rise.

A traditional yet trendy interior design style is the rustic farmhouse look. As a realtor specializing in country and farm living, it’s one of my favorites!

The wonderful thing about the rustic farmhouse style is its versatility. Not only is it cozy and homey, but it can also be easily be blended with other elements to create a look that is uniquely you. Love the farmhouse feel but also a fan of the edgy industrial look? Anything is possible!

1. Rustic Headboard with Lantern Lights

Beds and bedding are a pricy element of your home that you don’t want to skimp on. We all know how important a good night’s sleep is! But your headboard is one area of your bed that doesn’t have to break the bank. You can get creative and DIY your headboard with upcycled boards of wood! To complete the outdoorsy vibe, mount electric lanterns on either side. Not only does this look great, it saves space on your bedside tables and serves as a great reading light.

2. DIY Old Window Upcycle

This is one of the easiest, most inexpensive DIY projects we recommend to give your home an instant boost of cozy farmhouse vibes. Most of us see old, dirty windows as trash, but with a bit of TLC, you can turn them into a work of art. Just hit up your local antique shop or flea market (better yet, upcycle an old window from a loved one’s home as a keepsake), clean the window thoroughly, paint it, and sand it for the perfect rustic look. To achieve the mirror effect in the image above, just use some mirror effect spray paint.

3. Farmhouse-Industrial Dog Bowl Stand

Don’t leave fido out of the fun! Plain dog bowls by themselves can be a bit of an eyesore. Instead, make a statement with them by constructing a chic dog bowl stand! For bigger dogs, this stand makes for an easier and more comfortable eating experience. (Plus, it looks super cute!) There is plenty of room for creativity with this idea. You could go for a farmhouse-industrial look as in the photo above, using black iron pipes to mount the stand to the wall, or nix the industrial and use wooden legs to set the stand on the floor.

4. Distressed Wooden Quote Sign

This simple but eye-catching DIY project will bring a heartwarming touch to your wall. It’s easy enough to clean, paint, and distress a wooden board. The tricky part comes with the hand-painted calligraphy. Our tip for those with less-than-perfect handwriting is to trace stencils, then paint within the lines.

5. The Perfect Farmhouse Laundry Room

Doing laundry is a chore, but you can make it a little more fun by creating a laundry room you love spending time in. We love the idea of building a beautiful wooden table over your washer and drier to maximize space. To create even more storage space, build unique shelving out of painted wooden crates. Laundry day just got a little prettier!

Use reclaimed wood to handmake a beautiful, rustic frame. Imagine how pretty a gallery wall of handmade reclaimed wood frames would be?

7. Bring the Farm Inside with Sliding Barn Doors

A staple of the farmhouse chic aesthetic is sliding barn doors. This is a more time and labor-intensive project, but it certainly doesn’t have to break the bank. (That’s the beauty of the rustic look, isn’t it?) If you can’t find authentic barn doors secondhand, Wayfair offers relatively inexpensive options.

8. Rustic Coffee Bar with Succulents

Got space in your kitchen or dining room that needs a fun yet practical touch? If you’re a caffeine lover, why not create a dedicated coffee bar? Not only will this free up space on your main countertop and in your cabinets, but it also provides a space to display your plants! We love the idea of neutral wood and iron table and shelves with pops of green all over. If you’re more of a wine connoisseur than a java junkie, this idea could easily serve as a rustic bar cart!
